Not surprisingly, the Cape Cod Baseball League tops the CSBN 2021 list of the Top 10 Collegiate Summer Baseball leagues. again. The granddaddy of CSB, hasn’t missed a step despite the challenge of Major League Baseball’s two new entries into the ranks of wood-bat summer development play, which has been inauspicious to say the least.
Firmly entrenched in second place is the New England Collegiate Baseball League, which welcomed back the North Shore Navigators after a 9-year absence. The league now boasts two divisions with seven teams each. Impressive average quality given its large number of teams.
The venerable Valley Baseball League, located up and down Interstate 81 in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, took a big jump to third place this year moving up four spots from number seven in our 2019 rankings. (We did not calculate RPI last year due to Covid-19 cancellations).
One of our favorite leagues (because they seem to do everything right), the Coastal Plain League, remains in fourth place, which is a remarkable achievement given its fifteen-team lineup. CPL contiues to expand its footprint adding The Tri-City Chili Peppers (Colonial Heights, Virginia) and the Spartanburgers (Spartenburg, SC). The league plays in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Georgia.
The Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, riding the strength of the Bethesda Big Train with a roster score 160% higher than the rest of the league, maintained their fifth-place ranking. This lopsided league has great potential.
The California Collegiate League jumped from 10th place in 2019 to sixth this year. Now boasting ten teams, the CCL, is home to some of the best teams in Collegiate Summer Baseball.
The ever-fascinating Alaska Baseball League continues to rank among the elite in Collegiate Summer Baseball. Home of the Top of the World Series and the Midnight Sun Game, this highly competitive league attracts top players from all over North America.
Breaking into the top ten this year are two well-run Florida leagues. A hot bed of high school and college athletes in virtually all sports, it is no wonder that the Florida Collegiate Summer League (8th) and the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League (9th) have risen to the elite level.
Rounding out the top ten is the Northwoods League. The largest collegiate summer baseball league with 22 teams, the Northwoods provides great family entertainment each year with top-notch players to over 1.2 million fans in six Midwestern states. This highly successful well-managed league is the perennial attendance leader by more than double the next highest league. The Northwood League may well be the best overall collegiate summer league when all factors are considered.
